At Warmington Church we are moving towards a much more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. Part of this means working towards an Eco Church Bronze Award which takes into account activities in the churchyard as much as it does inside the building. In terms of the churchyard, we are working closely with the Parish Council who are responsible for maintaining the grounds in order to achieve the Bronze Conservation Award.
As you walk past the church, you will see that there is an area in front of the building that has been cordoned off. We are just experimenting with this area and would like your views.
You will see that the area concerned already has a number of wild flowers, and if you stand there long enough, you will notice that they have already attracted the attention of bees and other insects. We would like to encourage more plants and flowers in this area which in turn, will attract more bees, birds and insects. Underneath the surface, there are rare plants hidden in the soil which have not had the opportunity to get established because their growing season is when we mow the grass. We would just like to give them a chance to flourish.
We hope that as you see it develop, members of the community, and especially the school will get involved in the project as we would like to include bug hotels, nesting boxes and possibly dead hedges to store logs and wood (encouraging other small animals and insects).
We are as a church, committed to preserving both monuments and wildlife, in such a way that visitors can enjoy the churchyard whilst at the same time, recognising that we are doing our best to help nature flourish. There is so much we could do, and we would really welcome your help and ideas to move us forward. Please feel free to get in touch with me or leave your thoughts and ideas in the box which is just inside the church.
Many thanks, Rev Annie
